Fishing Boat

Fishing boats are a category of boat all their own. The main difference between them and other boats is primarily their open deck, outboard motor and a hull that rests close to the water making it easier to net a catch or place it in the boat. Brand name fishing boats include Boston Whaler, Wellcraft, Pro-Line, Lund, Tracker and SeaCraft to name a few.
Some Wellcraft and Pro-Line boats come with bow cabins designed for off-shore, deep sea fishing done off the back of the boat. All of these companies offer smaller open-hull fishing boats for lakes and rivers.
Most powered fishing boats have a V hull meaning that the shape of the hull resembles a V. For the serious fisher on smaller lakes and rivers, Tracker makes an open V hull boat that is not very deep, so the water is only a short reach away. This type of boat has fishing seats that rise up over the water and vary in horsepower (from 10 hp to 115 hp) depending on the needs of the buyer. These boats are relatively small, lightweight and easily trailered; recommended for only the serious fisher who wants to do nothing else with the boat.
Deeper V hull boats like the Boston Whaler and certain models of other brands make for a much more versatile boat whose primary function is still fishing. These boats can tow water skiers, hold more passengers, and provide more comfortable seating than boats designed specifically for fishing. They range anywhere from 11 to 20+ ft. with variable horsepower no less than 5 hp on the smallest model.
For deep sea fishing, a bigger fishing boat is desirable to handle the larger waves and swells of the open water. A cabin may also be necessary for overnight fishing trips, in case it rains or for the convenience of an enclosed bathroom and/or small kitchen. On these models there is usually an abundance of room for fishing off of the aft of the boat.
The material of a fishing boat's hull is important to the buoyancy of the boat and how easy it is to clean. Most powered fishing boats will be made of aluminum or fiberglass and the fiberglass is usually filled with buoyant foam. Different boat brands use different products in the construction of their boats and the quality of each product used affects the overall quality of the boat itself. The parts each company uses will gear a particular boat toward a particular end product. For example, Tracker prides itself on boat quality, custom trailers, and a smooth ride guarantee, while Boston Whaler touts its hull reliance and indestructibility along with the overall quality and easy maintenance of their final product. Wellcraft's selling points are the company's experience, the diversity of boats they have available, and their implementation of the most high-tech products in their boats.
Every fishing boat company is a little bit different. Browse for your needs while keeping in mind each company's strengths.
